Léopold Sédar Senghor was born in 1906 and died in 2001. A poet, teacher and cultural theorist, he became the first president of Senegal in 1960 and remained in power until 1980. Senghor was one of the originators of the concept of Négritude, defined as the literary and artistic expression of the black African experience.
